Fast facts

  • Quiet but spirited holiday town with excellent water sports facilities
  • Set on a waterway between St Georges Basin and the sea
  • 204 km south of Sydney, population 3,600

Why go there

Much of the town is built around a system of tidal canals, offering water panoramas and easy access for boating enthusiasts.

There are ocean beaches just to the south and the broad expanse of St George’s Basin to the north, while Jervis Bay is just a few km away. Each of these is a scenic sensation, and the proximity of these varied seascapes gives residents and visitors to Sussex Inlet a great range of leisure options.

History

The original inhabitants were the Dhurga Aboriginal people. It was not until 1878 that the first European settler arrived in the area, drawn by the beauty of the region. The canal system was begun in the 1950s and the town now has a solid core of full-time residents as well as a devoted clientele of holidaymakers who return year after year.
