National Maritime Festival - Exhibitions and Shows, Festivals and Celebrations, Sporting Events The National Maritime Festival celebrates Newcastle's rich maritime history and is now not only Newcastle's longest running event, but one of Australia's largest annual maritime festivals.
The National Maritime Festival was previously called The Newcastle Harbour Regatta, with the first regatta being held in 1834, consisting mainly of sailing events.
Later, the regatta format changed to include rowing races.
Today's Festival includes a variety of activities on land and on water.
Highlights include Navy and Tall Ship vessels opening for inspection; the National Ski Racing Classic; tours of the Harbour; a Viking re-enactment and camp; a Tug boat ballet; the SWIG Hunter Winemakers' Expo; the Mattara Maritime themed parade; as well as market stalls; kids play and face painting and many more events to entertain the whole family!
