Why go there
A day-only ski resort with no accommodation, Mount Selwyn is billed as the most family-friendly of Australian winter ski resorts. With a top elevation of 1,614 metres and 12 ski-lifts, the ski field lies on the northern slopes of the mountain. There is a wide range of activities available including downhill and cross-country skiing, snow tubing, and snow biking.
History
In 1859, gold was discovered around nearby Kiandra, which soon boomed with up to 10,000 miners. Little remains from those days but one notable event was the formation of Australia’s first ski club in 1860, which counted bush poet Banjo Patterson as one of its members. The Mount Selwyn ski fields were established in 1966 when the first lift was transferred there from Kiandra.
