Fast facts

  • Small country town on the western slopes of the Snowy Mountains
  • Lush grazing land, fresh mountain air and mountain backdrops
  • 570 km south-west of Sydney, population 300

Why go there

Just 13 km from the Victorian border, Khancoban lies at the south-western edge of the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park. The town serves the Snowy Mountains Scheme and you can visit the interactive Snowy Hydro Murray 1 Visitor Centre, the second largest power-generating station in the region.

History

The first Europeans settled the area in the 1830s, but it remained isolated until it became a service town for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The creation of the Alpine Way from Jindabyne helped expose Khancoban to the tourist market.

Things to do

  • Drive the Alpine Way, a spectacular pass that winds through Thredbo and across the Snowy Mountains to Khancoban.
  • Play a round of golf with kangaroos as companions at the Khancoban Country Club.
  • Test your limits with rock climbing, abseiling and hang-gliding.

Don’t miss

  • The changing colours of the landscape in autumn.
  • The Lady Hudson Rose Garden, established in 1959 as a tribute to the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
  • Fishing the trout-filled streams and enjoying other water sports at the Khancoban Pondage.
  • The panoramic views from Olsen’s and Scammel’s Spur lookouts.
  • The abundant wildlife, including wedge-tailed eagles and lyrebirds.
