Boorowa Visitors Information Centre and Arts and Craft Co-op

Attraction - Art, Building and Structure, Retail, Shopping, Visitor Information Centre

The Visitor Information Centre and Arts and Crafts Co-op are located in the Old Courthouse Building. This centre provides visitor information, sells local handmade products and has a Magistrates Tearoom.

A welcome awaits you as you browse amongst the wonderful display of locally made products, historical books of the district and souvenirs. A fine choice of hand-made jumpers are available for purchase and wonderful local jams and cakes like grandmother made.

The Boorowa Court House Arts and Crafts Co-operative is made up of local people who make and sell their goods through the craft shop. The craft room is located in the former Clerk of Petty Sessions Office. Often there is a special exhibition in the Magistrate's Courtroom with Mother's Day Exhibitions, Christmas Exhibitions, Quilts, Art Exhibitions or cultural performances.

The volunteers who operate the co-op enjoy welcoming visitors and discussing local tourism locations. Ask what there is to do in Boorowa and you will be pleasantly surprised. Boorowa has a reputation for clean facilities located just outside the visitor centre.

The Magistrate's Tea Room provides a delicious Devonshire Tea and toasted sandwiches offering a welcome respite on your stopover in Boorowa.

The present Courthouse Building was built in 1883 at a cost of 5750 pounds and the building officially opened in 1886. The Lock-up was proclaimed a public gaol in 1880.

In 1984 major renovations totalling $35,000 were carried out on the historic building to celebrate its centenary. The Court House was closed in 1988 and all books and records were transferred to Yass. It remains a fine example of a country courthouse and is used for art shows and exhibitions.

The Visitors Centre organises day tours of Boorowa for buses and groups as required.
