Ceilidh at Segenhoe Inn - Festivals and Celebrations

Aberdeen and the surrounding area of the Upper Hunter Valley was developed initially predominantly by Scottish free settlers and in honour of that past The Aberdeen Highland Games are held on the first Saturday in July each.

The Segenhoe Inn, built by convicts in 1837 and now 172 years old, stages its own Ceilidh on the Friday night of that weekend to start off the celebrations. This is a much anticipated event each year and sees many of the same guests returning each year. Seats are limited and the night features all Scottish fare, a piper in the house, the presentation of and Ode to the Haggis, lots of entertainment including Scottish Trivia with lots of prizes, singing dancing and an all-round good Scottish time.

Guests watch the street parade featuring pipe bands from around the State, many clan societies and various floats from the best vantage point in town - the second floor verandah of Segenhoe Inn with their hot chocolates in hand!! The procession moves from the main street into Jefferson Park for the opening of the games. The day encompasses pipe band displays, tartan warriors (strongmen), tug - o - war, egg throwing, kilted dash, three legged race, highland dress competitions, highland and Scottish country dancing, re-enactments of the old Scottish ways of living and much more.

But there is much more to do in around the area for that weekend as well -

Segenhoe Inn is the oldest accommodation for public guests on the mainland. Built in 1837 by convicts the magnificent Georgian building is a wonderful testament to the fortitude of those who settled this great land. If you want to learn more of the history of Australia then Segenhoe Inn is a must while you are in New South Wales. Immerse yourself in the gracious times past surrounded by antiques, silver, crystal and fine linens. The beautiful surrounds of the Upper Hunter Valley await your visit.

A visit to some of the fabulous internationally renowned horse studs in the area is a must do. Even for those who are not involved commercially in the horse industry are always astounded by what they learn and see when they make a foray into the rich man's world of horse racing when visiting the World's richest horse country.

For lovers of fine wine, olives and cheese and day out tasting some of the finer things in life is most enjoyable. You will be sure to take home some fine examples of locally grown produce.

Some of the country's finest country driving and exploration is available in this area. Visit Glenbawn Dam, continue on past Gundy after a stop for refreshment at the Linga Longa Pub, past Bell Trees property and make another stop at one of the many old pubs dotted around the area at Moonan Flats where you will be sure that Ned Kelly will appear at any moment!! Further driving on from here will take you over the fabulous Barrington Tops, a wilderness gem, make even more special when snow falls in the winter.

Driving north will take you through Scone and 20 minutes on stop off at the Wingen Pub for refreshment. Minutes up the road is an enormous Antique Store full of wonderful treasure including old farm machinery, smaller pieces often presenting themselves as different architectural treasures for the front of city properties.

Other great opportunities for discovery include a day out including visiting the historic gold mining town of Nundle brimming over with more special opportunities for retail therapy, and visiting the capital of Country Music Tamworth.

For the fit and adventurous, you will not find better opportunities for bushwalking including The Bicentennial National Trail, Burning Mountain and Barrington Tops. The local Visitor Information Centres can provide you with maps for dozens of different walks in the area.
