Accommodation
Early tourist accommodation was a mixture of grand resorts such as Caves House at Jenolan and Hotel Kosciuszko in the Snowy Mountains, pubs, boarding houses, guesthouses and beachside holiday flats.
The motel concept was borrowed from the Americans and many sprang up along the highways in the 1950s, while accommodation was built in the ski resorts during the same decade. The first high rise hotels were built in Sydney in the 1960s and 1970s, more international brand hotels opened in the 1980s and a massive hotel boom took place in the early 1990s with the opening of the Hyatt, Renaissance, Ritz Carlton and Nikko hotels.
Hotel construction took on an even feverish pace following the announcement that Sydney would host the 2000 Olympic Games. Serviced apartments became a popular alternative to hotels at the close of the century.
